To ensure collaboration between teachers that teach the OCR Nationals ICT courses why not take this opportunity to sign up and gain access to our forums and start collaborating!

We will continue to add as many resources for this page as is needed or suggested by you, the teacher. Topics:

Preparing for the Moderator's visit (Tips & Tricks)

  • Ensure all the candidates that will be moderated have been registered and entered for the different awards in good time.

    • You will be surprised how quickly time catches up with you! Depending on your school's budget for ICT or whoever pays the moderation bills, we suggest you register the whole year group at the start of Y10. This gives you and your staff 2 years to ensure at least 1 x GCSE by completing the National First Award. We have found in the more challenging schools, it is better to register all the candidates at the start of Y9 to have that extra year to secure at least 1 x GCSE and have the opportunity for the more able candidates to gain a possible 4 x GCSE's.
    • It's a good idea not to enter candidates for individual units, but rather for the different awards, etc. Entering candidates for individual units could cause confusion and disruption when your paperwork catches up with you and all the other subject areas are targeting the same candidates for coursework.

  • Make copies of the CRF's and CMSL's when they arrive - even better if you could scan them as PDF's.

    • If you start working on the originals and have to make ammendments later, your paperwork will look a mess (especially when many changes are made) and it won't look professional.
    • If you scanned the documents as PDF's, it won't be a problem if you lose or misplace them as you can always use your electronic copies as a fresh copy. You can also ask OCR to email you the documents as PDF's which will save a lot of time.

  • Seperate all marked folders for assessment by the moderator from folders not yet ready for moderation.

    • Unfortunately folders do go missing sometimes when in the hands of the candidates.
    • Have a safe area (lockable filing cabinet) where you can lock away folders for moderation.
    • It will also help you to not accidently enter candidates that haven't completed the work yet.

  • Have regular internal moderations.

    • This will help ensure that all work is of the correct standard for a pass, merit or distinction.
    • Once a folder is marked and ready for moderation, enter those details onto the CRF's and CMSL's.

  • Ensure the candidates folders are in the correct order.

    • Don't waste the moderator's time by handing in the folders and it's not sorted according to any format. Generally you want the moderator on your side and to be able to efficiently moderate and award the grades you want.
    • Also ensure that each folder that were selected have a AO devider so the moderator can easily distinguish between the different AO's.
    • Further ensure that each AO is in the criteria order, this will ensure easy and fluent moderation.

  • Keep an electronic copy of the candidates work handy that were selected or moderation.

    • Not all schools allow there candidates to print in colour. If there's a dispute by the moderator, you will be able to show on screen and secure the grade. This is especially helpful for Unit 2, Unit 3 and Unit 21 where the moderator will be able to see the webpage buttons, links, colour choices etc in action.
    • For Unit 22 the moderator will normally listen to the sound clip created by the candidates.

  • Snacks rather than Meals.

    • The moderators would normally want to get to your school, moderate and leave. They sometimes are travelling great distances to get to you and don't want to be stuck in traffic, etc.
    • Giving them a meal is good, but it would take them away from moderation for about 45 minutes to an hour.
    • We've found by giving hot and cold/ sweet and sour snacks, having tea or coffee ready works better or the moderators. It helps them focus on the moderation with minimum disruption.
